The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Samoa is teaming up with CERT NZ and other organisations to organise a special event called the ‘Cyber Smart Roadshow.’ This exciting 7-day campaign will take place in Savaii from 1st to 4th August 2023, with the aim of promoting online safety and cybersecurity throughout the nation.
Thanks to the support from CERT NZ and the New Zealand Government, this initiative is now a reality after productive discussions earlier this year. This partnership marks a significant step in improving Samoa’s cyber relationship and emphasizes our commitment to creating a Cyber Safe Samoa. The theme of the roadshow, ‘Samoa e! Mataala,’ will be promoted in every household and community across the country.
The main goal of the roadshow is to enhance Samoa’s cyber resilience through a comprehensive approach involving various agencies. The program will be tailored to the unique cultural context of Samoa and will include sessions for students and Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) in all colleges in Savaii.
Students will be educated on ethics, responsible technology use, and how to navigate the online world safely. Parents and teachers will receive information on current cyber trends in Samoa, incident log processes, cyber safety tips, and how to support and supervise their children’s online activities.
Church ministers and elders from different denominations will also play a crucial role in supporting the initiative by hosting evening sessions for their communities. This will ensure that valuable cyber-related information reaches key members of the public, turning them into advocates for a Cyber Smart Samoa.
One of the essential outcomes of the roadshow will be a comprehensive report. This report will contribute to the development of new cyber legislation in Samoa, aiming to improve incident handling processes and address cybersecurity matters effectively. The report will be presented to members of parliament during their session on Monday, 7th August 2023.
The roadshow emphasizes that everyone has a responsibility in the digital world, whether at the local, national, or international level. It highlights the importance of safeguarding personal data and its impact on shaping the future.
By promoting the slogan ‘Samoa e! Mataala’ and encouraging a collective effort in cybersecurity, Samoa aims to become a leading Pacific nation in recognizing the strength of information and partnership in social, political, and economic growth. The Cyber SMART Samoa Roadshow is a crucial step towards building a safer and more resilient digital community for everyone in the country.
