Soolao Manu, a 72-year-old resident of Lefagaoali’i in Savai’i, Samoa, found himself at the center of a deeply concerning incident recently, rooted in a contentious land dispute. The event has since caught significant attention, with details emerging from local news outlets including the Samoa Observer, Samoa Global News, and a personal interview on ET LIVE.

Upon returning from his travels between Samoa and overseas locations, Manu discovered that the land he believed to be his own was occupied by the local deacon reverend of the Catholic Church, who had set up a pig pen on the property. The disagreement over land ownership quickly escalated, with Manu reportedly using strong language against the faifeau (church minister).

In response to the altercation, the Village Council of Lefagaoali’i convened a meeting and unanimously decided to banish Manu from the village. When Manu defied the banishment, the council’s matai (chief) ordered the untitled men from the village to remove and punish him. As a result, Manu was tied to a stick, allegedly beaten, and taken away from his home. This harrowing episode was captured on video, which subsequently began circulating on social media platforms.

Police Commissioner, Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, confirmed the incident and mentioned the ongoing investigation in his statement to the Samoa Observer. He disclosed that Manu is currently receiving medical treatment at the main hospital in Savai’i.

The incident has led to extensive debate in Samoa, with many raising concerns about the clash between ancient traditions and modern legal and civil procedures. A growing number of Samoans are demanding that such conflicts be addressed through legal channels rather than resorting to traditional forms of punishment.
