A seasoned journalist from Samoa has recently earned the esteemed Freedom of the Media Award for Excellence in Commentary and Criticism at the National Press Club in Washington. Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson, known for her extensive advocacy for the rights of minority journalists globally, was recognised for her exceptional contributions.

Expressing her gratitude on social media, Lagipoiva described receiving the award during her inaugural visit to the National Press Club as an “absolute honour.” She acknowledged the significance of the accolade, especially among her media colleagues who have covered conflicts in places like Ukraine and Gaza.

Lagipoiva embarked on her journalism journey at the age of 19 as a reporter for Samoa Observer. Six years later, she assumed the role of editor for the Newsline newspaper in Apia. Hailing from Savai’i and holding the title of matai, Lagipoiva has dedicated more than two decades to reporting on critical issues such as climate change, human rights, gender, and culture.

During her time as a Reuters Fellow at the University of Oxford, Lagipoiva authored a groundbreaking study on the media’s coverage of the climate crisis in Pacific islands. Additionally, she has been honoured with a National Environment Award from the Government of Samoa in recognition of her outstanding work in climate journalism. Currently, Lagipoiva is employed by the Associated Press.
