Today, 14-year-old Ane Seumalu Vaelaa wowed the crowd as she walked to collect her prizes after being declared the dux of Aufaga Primary School at the prize-giving ceremony.
Her teacher responded to queries from this media outlet, describing Ane’s achievement as impressive. “Most of the time in class, Ane seems to be a shy student. She doesn’t ask questions, even though she needs clarity on certain subjects being taught. She struggles to do things on her own,” said Mr. Pene, Ane’s teacher. “I always encourage her to be the best version of herself because her shyness may hinder her progress and get in the way of seizing life opportunities.”
Mr. Pene explained that he is proud of Ane’s success, as she has stepped out of her comfort zone and surprised her class. The dux secured top place in Health and Physical Education, Social Studies, Samoan, Visual Arts, and Science.
In an interview after her primary school graduation today, the young woman expressed her gratitude to her teachers and classmates for always reaching out to her. She dedicated her achievement to her late father, Vaelaa, and her supportive mother, Siāopa.
Ane is the youngest of her parents’ children, hailing from the villages of Tiavea and Aufaga. Currently in the valley of decision, she feels unsure whether to pursue a career as a teacher or a doctor.
