In the latest financial update from the Ministry of Finance, significant adjustments have been made to Samoa’s retail fuel prices, effective from the 1st of February 2024. In a move welcomed by consumers, the government has announced a decrease in the prices of all petroleum products. Petrol prices will see a reduction of 2.7 sene per liter, moving from $3.15 to $3.12. Diesel prices are set to decrease by 6.0 sene per liter, from $3.38 to $3.32, while kerosene prices will drop by 2.4 sene per liter from $3.00 to $2.98. These price adjustments are a reflection of the December 2023 Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) market prices, providing a direct link to the international fuel market trends.

The decrease in retail fuel prices comes against a backdrop of declining crude oil and refined product prices in December, despite efforts by OPEC+ to stabilize the market by reducing crude oil supply. The ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, alongside Houthi militant attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea, has sparked global concerns. These geopolitical tensions have led to heightened freight costs, adding another layer of complexity to the global oil market dynamics.

Despite these challenges, Samoa’s proactive measures to adjust retail fuel prices offer some relief to local consumers and businesses, reflecting the government’s commitment to align domestic fuel prices with global market trends. The Ministry of Finance’s decision is seen as a step towards mitigating the impact of international market fluctuations on the Samoan economy, ensuring that the benefits of lower international oil prices are passed on to the consumers.
