The extension works on the Satupaitea District Hospital and the construction of a doctor’s residence for the staff was officially opened last week, 25 July 2025, in Savai’i.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa delivered the keynote address at the event that was very important to the district, this part of Savai’i and the village.

She said the project was a dream created day and night by the Government and Ministry of Health with the expectation of equal opportunities for all that utilise any health services.

Funded by the Government of Samoa under the Special Purpose Accounts, Fiame said it is a symbol of the Government’s vision to increase opportunities to improve health services and infrastructure for all people, in all parts of the country – in line with the plans set out in the Health Sector Plan 2019/20 – 2029/30 and the Pathway for the Development of Samoa 2022–2026.

Construction works for the project was conducted by Zheng Construction Ltd, at a total cost of SAT $471,365.06.

According to the Prime Minister, this is the same cost of similar works done at the Sataua District Hospital.

For the Satupaitea project, works started on 11 February 2025, and completed by 13 June 2025, marking a total of 4 months and 3 weeks.

Fiame said this was an excellent example of teamwork between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, the construction company, and Satupaitea.

Referring to the collaboration, she quoted the adage “many hands make light work,” noting that it made the construction quicker and easier to complete.

She acknowledged MWTI, MOH, the district and also the village for the diligent care and safe protection of the construction workers during the construction period.

Fiame also thanked Zheng Construction Ltd. for the diligent work and beautiful buildings.

She said this was clear proof of the vision of the Government of Samoa for the developments and health services in all of Samoa, including Savai’i.

Before closing her address, Fiame urged the staff that will be utilising these new facilities to take good care of these assets and use them wisely, as it helps provide them with support for carrying out their duties and services to people that live in this part of Savai’i.
