APIA, SAMOA – 23 October 2026 – The Ministry of Family and Social Affairs (MFSA) has signed a new funding agreement with the Samoa Umbrella for Non-Governmental Organisations (SUNGO) as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with civil society organisations across Samoa.

The agreement is intended to support SUNGO’s work with non-governmental organisations, improve community participation and provide opportunities for local organisations to contribute to national development programmes.

SUNGO was established in 1997 and represents more than 200 civil society organisations across Samoa, including community groups, charitable trusts and non-governmental organisations. Its work includes training, organisational development, research and representing the interests of its members in discussions with government agencies.

Minister of Family and Social Affairs, Hon. Moefaauouo Julius Ah Kui Tafuna’i, acknowledged the contribution of NGOs in reaching families and communities that require additional support.

“Our non-governmental organisations play a critical role in the development of our country,” the Minister said.

He said these organisations work closely with families, villages and vulnerable populations, often providing assistance in communities where government services may not reach everyone.

The agreement also forms part of the ministry’s plans to improve coordination between government agencies and community organisations, particularly in the delivery of social development programmes.

MFSA was established on 1 July 2026 following the restructuring of the former Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development. Its responsibilities include national policy, family wellbeing, social inclusion and the coordination of services supporting families and communities.

The ministry confirmed that further funding agreements with other NGO partners are expected to be signed over the coming month.

The announcement did not disclose the amount of funding allocated to SUNGO, the duration of the agreement or whether the funding would be distributed to member organisations or used to support SUNGO’s existing operations.
