More Samoan Elders Granted NZ Citizenship Under 1982 Law

We are pleased that the number of Samoan elders who have successfully applied for New Zealand citizenship under the Citizenship (Western Samoa) Act 1982, which was reintroduced in the New Zealand Parliament by MP Teanau Tuiono, continues to grow. All the information regarding applications for New Zealand citizenship is available on the Department of Internal Affairs website.

There is now a support group called FALIU LE LA, coordinated by the ASA Foundation, for families of elders who have received citizenship. This group helps by providing information on benefits that elders may be eligible for once they become New Zealand citizens. For families with elders who have successfully gained citizenship and wish to join the FALIU LE LA support group, please contact Teleiai Edwin Puni via email: [email protected]

Examples of what support may be available include:

  • Applications for WINZ benefits for those residing in New Zealand or elders visiting New Zealand temporarily.
  • Applications for housing and health services.
  • Applications for the Super Gold Card, which provides travel benefits within New Zealand.

Some elders may have difficulty travelling long distances. However, it is still recommended to apply for NZ citizenship because if the application is successful, the fee paid may be fully refunded. There is also an effort underway to request the government to remove the current 10-year residency requirement in NZ before becoming eligible for the NZ pension. If this effort is successful, it may allow those living in Samoa to access this benefit.

Some couples are both still alive, but only one (husband or wife) qualifies under the Citizenship (Western Samoa) Act 1982, while the other does not. However, it may be possible to apply for a residence visa under the Partnership Category. See the attached documents for more information. Below are the names and contact numbers of Samoan lawyers who specialise in immigration matters and can assist:
