PAGO PAGO – June 13, 2025 – The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR) has issued a public media release following the discovery of approximately 300 dead fish at the Pago Pago marina last Sunday.

The incident was reported by a member of the public on the morning of June 8. In response, DMWR staff conducted an on-site investigation and collected water and fish samples for laboratory testing.

According to the official release, preliminary observations show no immediate threat to other marine life, but the cause of the die-off remains under investigation. Early water tests have focused on the presence of phytoplankton, while the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA) has been engaged to test for bacterial levels in the area.

The DMWR stated that while some bacteria occur naturally in marine waters, excessive levels can be harmful and may warrant further public health action.

Though the affected area is not commonly used for swimming, the department is advising the public to exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities in waters around Pago Pago, Utulei, and Fagatogo.

No additional fish deaths have been reported since the initial incident. DMWR confirmed it will continue monitoring the harbor and provide further updates as more information becomes available.

For more information, the public is encouraged to contact DMWR at (684) 633-4456.
