For five days, Samoa’s current athletes and retired sportspeople carried the baton of the King of the United Kingdom, King Charles III.

This is a long-standing tradition of the Royal Family, where important messages are delivered to all Commonwealth nations through the torch or the King’s baton.

This year, the message is focused on cleaning up coastlines and oceans across Commonwealth countries, as was stressed in King Charles’s first Commonwealth meeting after ascending the throne in 2024, which was held in Samoa.

In an interview with Samoa Newshub, the Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC) said the programme was impressive, as it visited many villages along the way.

“It is a beautiful programme. Whether in rain or dry weather, the children of the nation kept running with this baton through the areas that were assigned.

“The support of those who have, for many years, carried Samoa’s flag at events overseas has encouraged many young athletes.

“As is known, this event will officially conclude in Glasgow when all Commonwealth athletes gather for the major Games planned for July”

All photos taken during the programme will be shown in Glasgow, along with the King’s baton that travelled around Samoa, when the country’s selected delegation arrives in Glasgow.

Government ministries and organisations also played their part in supporting the baton relay.
