Apia, Samoa – Samoa has crowned its new Miss Universe representative, Ms. Haylani Pearl Kuruppu, who will compete in the upcoming 73rd Miss Universe competition in Mexico City this November.

The crowning ceremony, held on September 20 at the Orator Hotel in Apia, was attended by government officials, including Acting Prime Minister Hon. Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, who delivered remarks highlighting the significance of Samoa’s return to the Miss Universe platform after more than 30 years.

“We gather here to celebrate and crown our Miss Universe Samoa, who will have the honour of representing our beautiful country at the Miss Universe competition,” said Ponifasio.

Ms. Kuruppu, who previously represented Samoa at the Miss Global Pageant in Cambodia in 2023, where she finished as one of the top two finalists, was praised for her achievements and dedication.

“Your journey is not just one of personal achievement, but one that inspires hope and pride in the hearts of Samoans everywhere,” Ponifasio told Kuruppu during the ceremony.

Samoa’s re-entry into the global pageantry scene was also described as part of broader efforts to promote the country as a tourist destination, with the private sector playing a key role in the initiative. Ponifasio credited the event organizers, Manaia Events, for their vision and effort in returning Samoa to the world stage.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women in leadership roles and public representation. “We believe in the invaluable contributions of women to the progress and development of our society,” Ponifasio said.

Kuruppu will compete at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico City on November 16, carrying Samoa’s hopes and representing its cultural heritage on the global stage. Ponifasio urged her to remember the significance of her role.

“You embody the grace, strength, and resilience of our people.”

The event was supported by Vodafone Samoa, Fiji Airways, and other sponsors.
