Japan’s New Ambassador presents credentials to Samoa’s Head of State

H.E. Mr. Ryotaro Suzuki officially presented his Letters of Credence to Samoa’s Head of State, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, on 9 January 2025. The ceremony at the Head of State’s residence in Vailele confirmed his appointment as the resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa. He was accompanied by Mr. Kazuo Tsukada, Deputy Head of Mission.

The ceremony highlighted the strong ties between Samoa and Japan, which were established in 1973. During his address, Ambassador Suzuki discussed Japan’s commitment to strengthening the relationship with Samoa, stating, “The Government and the People of Japan attach great importance to further strengthening the relationship with Samoa for mutual benefits of both countries.” He expressed his dedication to expanding cooperation between the two nations.

In his response, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II acknowledged the progress in bilateral relations over the years. “Our relationship has developed over the years, demonstrating a genuine and enduring partnership with mutual benefits,” he remarked. The Head of State also conveyed confidence that Ambassador Suzuki’s appointment will further enhance the partnership.

Ambassador Suzuki brings extensive diplomatic experience to his new role. He previously served as Japan’s Ambassador to Iceland and held senior positions in Canada, Sweden, Laos, and the OECD. A graduate of the University of Cambridge (LL.M. in International Law) and the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law, Ambassador Suzuki arrived in Samoa in December 2024, succeeding H.E. Senta Keisuke.
