Journalist Association of Western Samoa (JAWS) President, Lagi Keresoma, believes more training is needed to build capacity in Samoa’s media industry.
“The industry has grown. Young journalists and camera operators are emerging. It’s essential to strengthen and uphold journalistic values through workshops and training,” Keresoma said in an interview with Samoa Newshub.
JAWS recently received a £12,000 grant from the United Kingdom Integrated Security Fund (UK ISF) under the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The funds will support JAWS’ governance, training, professional development, freedom of expression, and independent media reporting.
“We need to engage with the public – churches, communities, and village councils – to explain the media’s role in sharing important information that affects their daily lives. It’s not just about negative stories but also about what matters to them,” she said.
She told media professionals to follow protocols and ensure clear communication between the government and the public.
