Work has officially commenced on the auxiliary upgrades to the Samoa Aquatic Centre in Tuanaimato, part of the Ninth-Phase China Aid Samoa Apia Comprehensive Sports Venues Technical Assistance Project.

The ceremony on Thursday morning brought together Chinese engineers and project managers, government officials, and staff from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MSR). In his keynote speech, Hon. Laumatiamanu Ringo Mathew Purcell thanked the Chinese government for their ongoing partnership and support.

“This project is not just about improving infrastructure,” he said. “It’s about uplifting the dreams and ambitions of our youth and athletes.”

Originally constructed by China in 2005, the Aquatic Centre has been an important venue for local and international swimming competitions. The refurbishment, expected to take 150 days, will enhance the facility’s capacity to support Samoa’s sports development goals.

Chinese Ambassador Fei Mingxing also attended the event and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Samoa’s development across sectors.

Laumatiamanu acknowledged the engineers, workers, and support teams involved in the project, calling it a reflection of Samoa and China’s long-standing cooperation.

“We deeply appreciate China’s continued contribution to Samoa—not only in sport but also in health, education, and infrastructure,” he said.

The MSR confirmed that the upgraded facility will help the country host events at international standard while providing improved access for local athletes and communities.
