The Samoan flag has been raised, symbolising the commemoration of 63 years of independence.

The joyful atmosphere was evident as Samoans of all ages, from young children to elders, gathered to witness the government programmes and ceremonies dedicated to the raising of our flag, celebrating our free nation.

The main event was held at the Government House, FMFM II, at Ele’ele Fou.

The service was led by Rev. Aisoli Iuli, Chair of the National Council of Christian Churches in Samoa, who officiated the religious service to bless all events marking our independence celebrations this year.

His Highness the Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa, Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, delivered the official opening remarks.

The raising of Samoa’s independence flag was conducted by Member of the Council of Deputies Tui Ātua Tupua Tamasese Efi, accompanied by Commissioner of Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, along with other government officials.

Following these formal segments of the programme, a ceremonial parade commenced, led by the Police Band. It included school children, private businesses, government ministries and organisations, women’s committees, and other groups who registered to participate, contributing to this year’s independence celebration.

The ceremony concluded with a special performance by the Police Band and a closing address by the Chairperson of the Independence Celebration Main Committee, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa.

This year’s special guests were the Governor of American Samoa, Lemanu Palepoi Sialega Mauga, and his wife, Lois Pula, along with the Ulu o Tokelau, Esera Tuisano, and his wife, Fa’amaisealofa Tuisano.

Around 1,000 people attended the ceremony to witness the commemoration of Samoa’s 63rd year of independence.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Agafili Tomaimanō Shem Leo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
