Samoa’s Executive Assistant to the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Garry Aukuso Selesele, is currently in China for a three-week cultural and language seminar. He is one of twenty-five Samoan delegates participating in the international exchange initiative aimed at strengthening understanding between Samoa and China.
“This is my first time here, and I admit that it’s a wonderful place. Who would have thought I would set foot in China?” he told Samoa Newshub.
As part of the seminar, the 25-year-old attended lectures on China’s development strategies, including policies around women and children.
“As a public servant, this is great, as Samoa is also committed to valuing women and children and their welfare.”
The group also participated in cultural activities, including a visit to the Great Wall of China during the first week of the programme.
He said the exposure to topics such as vocational training, administration, and advanced technology is essential to building capacity in Samoa’s public sector.
“These discussions are crucial to elevate the standard of our nation, one step at a time.”
He also acknowledged China’s role in Samoa’s development through education.
“We’ve been to various universities where the provision of scholarships to Samoan students was one of the topics being discussed. There are many Samoans who studied in China and are now serving in key roles across government.”
Mr. Aukuso said he is keen to apply what he learns to improve his work back home. The visit marks part of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Samoa and China.
