The 2021 Vaitele hit-and-run case, which claimed the life of Tuuau Faasavalu, has seen significant developments recently. The key witness, Samuelu Leau Su’a, known also as Sam Sua, Fauena Leautuli Toese Sua, or Sam Simiko, has been located by the police, along with two women suspected of aiding him. These developments come after an intense period of investigation and public speculation.

Samuelu Leau Su’a, 41 years old, hailing from Tafa’igata, Sapulu Salelologa, and Tanugamanono, had previously come forward on the ‘Tautai A’e’ show on BluTV, making bold allegations against Member of Parliament Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi regarding the hit-and-run incident. He claimed he was paid $9,000 for his silence and also made allegations against other high-profile individuals.

Following his public statements, Samoa’s Cabinet directed the Office of the Attorney General to carry out an urgent assessment of the evidence and consider the involvement of a Special Unit of foreign Police in the investigation. This decision was influenced by the complexity and the high-profile nature of the case, as well as the potential conflicts of interest within local Police. However, it does not seem to be a direction the Attorney General’s office would likely pursue

Samuelu Leau Su’a, also known as Sam, was found not with Marie Tusi Kepi, also known as Koteen, but with his wife and another unnamed woman. According to a Radio Samoa interview with the Police Commissioner, Sam was apprehended by police at the NPF building this morning accompanied by two women. Sam has been charged with defamation and other unknown charges.

The Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, has reiterated that the Vaitele hit-and-run case investigation has always been active. The recent apprehension of Samuelu Leau Su’a, known as Sam, along with two women, marks a significant turn in this long-standing case, which has been the subject of considerable public attention and criticism over the police’s handling for over two years.

While Sam is being considered for defamation, the credibility of his claims remains in question. This development could be crucial for the ongoing investigation into the tragic death of Tuuau Faasavalu. At this stage, there is no word from the Attorney General’s office regarding the direction the case will take.
