Auckland, New Zealand – Dr. Therese Lautua, a proud Samoan academic with roots in Manurewa, is poised to make waves in the academic realm as she takes her expertise to one of the world’s most esteemed institutions, Harvard University.

Born and raised in New Zealand, Dr. Lautua’s academic journey has been marked by dedication and passion for her Pacific heritage. At just 31 years old, she stands as a beacon of inspiration for Pasifika youth, showcasing the heights that can be reached through hard work and determination.

In a recent interview with RNZ, Dr. Lautua expressed her astonishment at being offered a teaching position at Harvard, one of the most prestigious universities globally, as reported by RNZ. “I was shocked I got an interview,” she shared. “Teaching at an Ivy League university was something I had never considered, but I saw it as an opportunity to help people decolonise in their own context and share our amazing Pacific knowledge.”

Her academic journey began with a doctoral thesis that delved into the intersection of culture, spirituality, and mental wellbeing in the 21st century. Dr. Lautua’s groundbreaking research explored how images of God and cultural identity impact mental health, shedding light on crucial issues within the Pasifika community.

Now, as she prepares to embark on this new chapter in her career, Dr. Lautua aims to inspire and inform students at Harvard through a Pacific worldview. Drawing inspiration from the resilience of Pasifika women, she intends to integrate elements of Pacific spirituality and mental health awareness into her teachings.

“Being mothers, working at the same time, understanding their gender roles and within church too,” Dr. Lautua explained. “Communicating how important our religious beliefs are to us and incorporating how mental health is not separate from our spirituality is something I hope to do.”

Central to her mission is the exploration of decolonising Christian beliefs and practices, emphasising the richness of indigenous beliefs alongside Christianity for the holistic wellbeing of Pacific communities. Dr. Lautua passionately believes that Pacific people are richer for having their indigenous beliefs and Christianity intertwined to enhance the wellbeing of all.

As she prepares to depart for Boston with her husband and two children, Dr. Lautua sees this as just the beginning of her journey as an international lecturer. She encourages other Pasifika individuals to pursue their dreams boldly, urging them to embrace audacious opportunities and showcase the world the incredible potential within the Pacific community.

With her appointment at Harvard University, Dr. Therese Lautua not only represents the resilience and ingenuity of Pasifika scholars but also paves the way for future generations to thrive on the global stage.
