For seventeen years, Tariu Shalom Tevita struggled to secure a top position at Salelologa Primary School. Despite his efforts, he never ranked in the top five, leaving him feeling like a failure. His classmates’ disdain for his perceived poor academic performance only fueled his self-doubt.

“During those years, I constantly labeled myself as a failure. I avoided competition because I felt inferior to my peers,” Tariu recalled.

Despite his insecurities, Tariu’s father, Tevita Tariu Sinapati, remained a steadfast source of encouragement.

“Even though Tariu wasn’t among the prize recipients at annual ceremonies, I always made sure to prepare a lolly lei (ula lole) for him, a simple gesture to show my unwavering support,” said Tevita.

Tevita firmly believed in his son’s potential, despite Tariu’s own doubts.

With his parents’ unwavering support, Tariu completed his education at Mata-Ae-Vave College, but his journey was far from over as he embarked on the challenging path of university life.

Following the passing of Mr. Tevita’s grandmother due to diabetes and high blood pressure in 2013, Tariu’s father encouraged him to pursue nursing at the Foundation Year level.

Upon receiving his Bachelor of Nursing Degree, Tariu, overcome with emotion, turned to his parents with heartfelt questions.

“Mom and Dad, was my graduation real, or was it just a dream? How did I manage to reach the finish line? Do I truly deserve it?”

For the first time, Tariu chose to believe in himself, recognising his own worth and accomplishments. His journey mirrored the lyrics of a song his father had written for his school, embodying the essence of perseverance and determination.

Tariu shared the importance of humility in achieving success, expressing gratitude to his parents, Tevita Tariu Sinapati and Faaolaseu Tariu, as well as his spiritual mentors, Rev. Pou Tuigamala and Tusi Tuigamala, and the congregation for their unwavering support.

As the eldest child in the family, Tariu now works as a nurse, enabling him to support his father financially.

When asked for advice to impart to students, Tariu shared, “Never give up, cherish your bond with your parents and faith, remain humble, and always trust in your abilities.”
