The Regional Director of the World Health Organisation took time out from his commitment to the 15th annual Pacific Heads of Health Forum currently held in Apia, to spend time with the abused children under the care of the Samoa Victim Support Group.
The Campus of Hope was graced with a visit from the newly appointed Regional Director, Dr. Saia Ma’u Pikala, who, amidst his commitments at the 15th annual Pacific Heads of Health forum held in Apia, made time to meet with the children.
Director, Dr. Saia Ma’u Pikala, who was accompanied by Dr. Kim Eva Dickson, the Head of WHO and Representative for Samoa were greeted with joyful smiles from the children.
It was a reception that the Regional Director commended the children for their resilient spirits and efforts in rising above the challenges they faced also encouraging them to continue developing the impressive talents they had showcased. As the inaugural Pacific Islander in the role of WHO Regional Director, Dr. Saia inspired the children to ambitiously pursue any career they aspire to in the future. He expressed profound appreciation to Madam President Siliniu Lina Chang, management and staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication in supporting Samoa’s vulnerably young ones and their significant contribution to the welfare of the nation’s women and children.
Dr. Pikala, having been introduced to SVSG and its initiatives at the 15th Pacific Health Minister’s Meeting in Tonga in September 2023, ensured that a visit to the Campus of Hope was included during his initial trip to Samoa.
The visit allowed the Regional Director to personally observe the Campus of Hope, gaining insight into its active programs and commitment to protecting the children of Samoa. Additionally, the visit highlighted SVSG’s achievement as the esteemed recipient of the WHO Healthy Islands Recognition Award for the Best Proposal of 2023. The SVSG’s “Farm to Table Garden and Cooking Project” is designed to employ gardening and culinary activities to foster the recovery of abused and vulnerable children residing at the Campus of Hope. With the project set to roll out next month, Dr. Pikala looks forward to monitoring the projects progress and success.
Dr. Saia and associates were taken for a guided tour around the Campus, detailing the various residences for the children and emphasising the on-site school designed to ensure the continuation of their education. The tour concluded as the Regional Director spend time with all six infants at the SVSG House of Blessings.
