Samoa marked its 62nd anniversary of independence with a grand ceremony in Mulinu’u, where citizens from all walks of life gathered to celebrate the nation’s journey since achieving sovereignty in 1962. The event was attended by key figures including the Prime Minister, members of the Cabinet, the Chief Justice, justices of the courts, and other dignitaries.

In a heartfelt speech, the head of state recalled the inaugural independence day celebrations and the overwhelming pride felt by those present. Pointing out the continuity of leadership and the nation’s Christian foundations, the speaker expressed gratitude towards God and the forefathers whose efforts secured Samoa’s independence.

The ceremony also served as a platform to thank the Samoan diaspora for their ongoing contributions to the country’s development, particularly in the fields of professional sectors and religious communities abroad. The significance of maintaining peace, law, and order through village and district leadership was highlighted, praising their pivotal role in supporting government initiatives.

Looking to the future, the head of state outlined the pressing challenges of climate change, security, and health. The speech stressed the importance of a united response to these issues, underscoring the power of solidarity and collaboration to achieve greater outcomes for present and future generations.

The upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting scheduled to be held in Apia this October was also mentioned as an exceptional opportunity for Samoa to showcase its culture and hospitality on the global stage.

The event concluded with a call to all Samoans to keep their faith strong and seek divine guidance in their endeavors. As Samoa reflects on its past achievements, the nation remains committed to fostering a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient future.

“Happy Independence, Samoa, and may God bless us all,” the head of state concluded, encapsulating the spirit of the day.
