Vailima, Samoa – On Friday afternoon 5 July, Prime Minister Hon. Fiame Naomi Mataafa addressed attendees at the celebration of the 248th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. The event, hosted by U.S. Ambassador Tom Udall at the U.S. Embassy Residence in Vailima, brought together distinguished guests, including government officials, members of the judiciary, and the diplomatic corps.

In her speech, Prime Minister Mataafa extended heartfelt congratulations to the United States on behalf of the Government and people of Samoa. She spoke about the importance of reflection during such celebrations, and highlighted on current global challenges, including climate change and geopolitical tensions, and their impact on bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the United States’ renewed efforts to combat climate change, a top priority for Samoa and the Pacific region. She praised USAID’s focus on climate change, food security, and disaster preparedness, and looked forward to further investments in disaster risk reduction and preparedness.

Prime Minister Mataafa also recognised the contributions of the U.S. Coast Guard in maritime surveillance, which has strengthened partnerships with Samoa’s Police Maritime wing and regional collaborators. She stressed how crucial it is to keep a minimal security presence in Samoa, even with the rise in military activities.

The Soifua Manuia Medical Mission’s provision of essential healthcare services, including advanced medical care and knowledge sharing, was another highlight of her speech. Additionally, she commended the Peace Corps program for its long-standing support, particularly in the education sector.

Cultural exchanges were celebrated, notably the International Jazz Day event in April, where the Navy Pacific Fleet Band performed with local artists. The Prime Minister thoroughly enjoyed their performances.

Before concluding, Prime Minister Mataafa bid farewell to Ms. Noriko Horiuchi, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission in Apia, acknowledging her contributions and wishing her well in future endeavours. She expressed anticipation for welcoming her successor soon.

The Prime Minister ended her address with a toast, wishing for the continued prosperity of the United States and the enduring close relations between Samoa and the USA.
