The signing ceremonies for the Project for Reconstruction of Samatau Primary School and the Project for the Improvement of the Satupa’itea District Water Supply System were held earlier today (7 August) at the Embassy in Apia.
H.E. Mr. SENTA Keisuke, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, signed over the grants under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) to the representatives of the project committees.
The Samatau Primary School Committee received a grant of up to USD 148,151 (approximately SAT 400,000) for the reconstruction of its old school building, which has been deemed unsafe for use, forcing students to attend classes in nearby family homes. This project involves the reconstruction of a single-story classroom building that will include eight classrooms, a library, a staff room, and a principal’s office. To enable a safe and proper educational environment, this project aims to significantly improve the quality of basic education services in Samatau village.
The Independent Water Schemes Association, a nonprofit organisation, received a grant of up to USD 169,971 (approximately SAT 458,000) for the improvement of the water supply system in Satupa’itea district in Savai’i. This project will replace old pipes, repair the water source intake, construct a new weir, and install filters, a pressure-reducing valve, and a water kiosk equipped with a tap, basin, and filter at the district hospital. Managed by the community and registered under the Independent Water Schemes Association, this project aims to secure a reliable water supply system, thereby enhancing the life and health environment for the residents of Satupa’itea district.
The Government of Japan looks forward to the successful implementation of these projects and is confident that they will have a lasting positive impact on the communities involved. Japan remains committed to working closely with local partners to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all through its GGP.
