Vailima, Samoa – The Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, officially welcomed Mr. Daniel J. Tarapacki, the new Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Samoa, during a reception held in Vailima on Thursday evening. The event, attended by various dignitaries including the Head of State, Ministers, members of Parliament, and the diplomatic community, marked the beginning of Mr. Tarapacki’s diplomatic assignment in Samoa.

In his address, Hon. Tuala highlighted the growing relationship between Samoa and the United States, acknowledging the U.S. government’s plans to expand its presence in the Pacific with a full-fledged embassy in Apia, represented at the Ambassadorial level.

“We are pleased to welcome you to Samoa, and we are optimistic about the future of our relations,” Hon. Tuala said. “The U.S. government’s decision to expand its presence here underscores the importance of the Pacific region, and we look forward to seeing the establishment of the U.S. Embassy in Samoa in the near future.”

Hon. Tuala also pointed to the longstanding cooperation between the two nations, particularly in sectors such as health, education, environment, and security. He referenced the U.S. Peace Corps program, which has been a cornerstone of bilateral ties, along with continued efforts to address shared challenges like climate change and ocean health.

“The United States has been a key partner in Samoa’s development, providing support through programs such as the Soifua Manuia Health initiative and leadership exchanges that have benefited our future generations,” Hon. Tuala stated.

On security matters, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Samoa’s stance on maintaining a “light security footprint,” while appreciating U.S. assistance under the Fisheries Treaty and other efforts aimed at safeguarding maritime borders and preventing illicit activities.

Mr. Tarapacki’s arrival comes after recent visits by U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, Tom Udall, who engaged in discussions on U.S. support for Samoa’s development and regional stability.

Concluding his remarks, Hon. Tuala proposed a toast to the continued cooperation between Samoa and the United States, expressing confidence that Mr. Tarapacki’s term in Samoa would be both enjoyable and productive.

“To the growing relations and cooperation between Samoa and the United States. Ia Manuia!”
