Savai’i’s farming and fishing communities are set to benefit from the SAFPROM Matching Grants Program (MGP) Window 3, an initiative designed to improve productivity and sustainability across Samoa’s agricultural sector. This week, the Samoa Business Hub (SBH), led by Savai’i Division Manager Pauli Tevita Tariu, conducted a comprehensive assessment of proposals from local farmers and fishers. The assessment focused on projects that could enhance both crop and livestock production, as well as fisheries, across the island.
The SAFPROM grants, a collaboration between the Government of Samoa and the World Bank, have helped farmers and fishers invest in improved tools and sustainable practices. Previous recipients of the grants have used the funds to upgrade farming infrastructure, including water access and irrigation systems, as well as acquire better farming equipment. These grants have supported a variety of agricultural activities, from growing staple crops like taro, banana, and cocoa to improving poultry and livestock farms.
Livestock farmers, including those raising cattle and chickens, have also benefited from improved facilities and access to essential resources such as water and feed. By enabling farmers to invest in sustainable and modern methods, the program helps ensure the resilience of Samoa’s agriculture.
Fishers have similarly gained access to better tools and technologies, making their operations more efficient and sustainable. This has had a positive impact on the fishing communities that rely on the coastal and marine environment for their livelihoods.
With continued support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Civil Society Support Program, the SAFPROM initiative ensures that grant funding reaches those who need it most, helping to secure the future of Samoa’s farming and fishing communities.
