Honourable Toelupe Poumulinuku Onesemo, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, addressed the closing session of the CERT & IT Training Program at the Lava Conference Room in Sogi on 24 September 2024. The program was designed to strengthen Samoa’s cybersecurity ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.
In his speech, Minister Onesemo emphasised the importance of digital security in the modern world, stating that “cybersecurity is not a luxury but a necessity.” He acknowledged the growing dependence on digital networks in sectors such as public service, education, and healthcare, adding that the government must remain vigilant in protecting these systems from threats.
The training, supported by the governments of New Zealand and Australia, aimed to enhance Samoa’s readiness to respond to cyber threats. Minister Onesemo expressed gratitude to both nations for their contributions, saying, “Your investment in Samoa’s cybersecurity infrastructure underscores the profound partnership we share.”
A key highlight of the initiative is the establishment of a Security Operations Center (SOC), which Minister Onesemo described as “a pioneering achievement in Samoa and the Pacific.” The SOC, developed with assistance from the Australian Government, is part of a broader effort to safeguard Samoa’s digital landscape during and beyond CHOGM 2024.
Minister Onesemo also praised the collaboration with regional partners and the practical applications the training offers. “This is the chance to apply what you have learned and to make a meaningful impact,” he told participants, urging them to fully engage with the knowledge and skills gained.
He concluded by reiterating the critical role the participants will play in ensuring the security of Samoa and the Pacific region. “Your roles are not just tasks to fulfill; they are critical contributions to our nation’s security and reputation in the region and to the international community,” he said.
The CERT & IT Training Program marks a significant step in Samoa’s preparations for CHOGM 2024, which is set to take place in October.
