The Samoa Culture and Arts Centre hosted a special museum talk yesterday, featuring Dr. Hilke Thode-Arora’s presentation on her monograph, From Samoa With Love? Samoan Travellers in Germany 1895-1911. The event, supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe Institute, focused on the cultural exchanges between Samoa and Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Minister of Education and Culture Seuula Ioane Tua’au opened the talk, emphasizing the value of the research. “This work reminds us of the power of storytelling and the responsibility of our museums as guardians of diverse histories,” he said.
Dr. Thode-Arora’s monograph examines the journeys of Samoan travelers to Germany during this period, shedding light on their experiences in a colonial context. “The journeys of these Samoan individuals reveal both the curiosity and the cultural misunderstandings of that era,” said the Minister.
He described the research as “a critical, respectful look into cross-cultural exchanges,” which highlights the aspirations and cultural pride of Samoan travelers.
The event underscored the role of museums in fostering dialogue and reflection. “Our museums are spaces for dialogue, sharing, education, and reflection. Talks like these help create a more inclusive and caring future,” the Minister stated.
Dr. Thode-Arora’s work, which has been years in the making, received high praise. “Your work is a gift not only to histories but to all those interested in increasing their understanding of the human journey,” said the Minister.
The event’s success was attributed to its overseas partners, with the Minister thanking the German Embassy and Goethe Institute for their support. “Your commitment has made it possible for us to provide this unique opportunity for learning, connection, and cultural exchange,” he said.
This collaboration between the Museum of Samoa and the National University of Samoa reflects a shared mission to preserve and share the nation’s cultural history.
