This morning, Samoa’s Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, extended congratulations following the official swearing-in of three distinguished individuals as members of the Council of Deputies. These appointments support the leadership of His Highness, the Head of State of Samoa, Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aleto’a Sualauvī II.
The ceremony was attended by family, friends, and prominent Samoan leaders, who witnessed the swearing-in of the three appointees before the Chief Justice of Samoa, the Head of State, the Prime Minister, and representatives of Samoa’s three-tier governance system.
In her address, the Prime Minister said:
“I extend my congratulations and gratitude to you, the newly sworn-in members of the Council of Deputies. The foundation of these appointments lies in the Constitution of the Independent State of Samoa, as formalised by the Speaker of the House during Parliament’s final session last December.
“I believe the appointments of His Highness Tui Ātua, Susuga Malietoa, and His Highness Le Lā’ulu are divinely inspired. All appointments are rooted in God. Our responsibilities and roles are strengthened through the guidance of our Almighty God and the Holy Spirit.
“When our forefathers established our Constitution, they carefully defined the roles and responsibilities of these significant positions to support the Head of State. We acknowledge their foresight and the divine guidance that led to the foundation of our independent nation.
“These roles are not new to you. His Highness Tui Ātua previously held this position in past years. I am confident that your collective leadership will bring stability and harmony as you undertake the work of the Council of Deputies.
“I also take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Le Mamea Ropati Mualia, who has carried the responsibilities of a Council member since 2016. Thank you for your dedication and service. May God bless you.
“My prayer is that the Almighty will grant you wisdom and peace as you assume these roles. Let us entrust our work to Him, seeking His guidance and patience. Together, let us navigate our responsibilities for the benefit of Samoa and its people.
“May God bless you with health and wisdom as you carry out these duties. Let us dedicate the beginning of this new year and this sacred week of national prayer and fasting to God.”
The ceremony marked the beginning of their tenure as members of the Council of Deputies.
