Airport boss responds to concerns over vehicle checks at Faleolo

The Samoa Airport Authority has responded to public concerns after drivers reported unexpected vehicle checks at the entrance to Faleolo International Airport.

General Manager Tumanuvao Evile Falefatu said the screening measures were introduced in response to serious safety concerns, following three violent incidents on airport grounds over recent months. These included disputes in the public car park involving weapons such as machetes, and in one case, the discharge of a firearm.

“These occurrences represent a threat to the safety and security of travellers, airport personnel, and the general public,” said Falefatu.

He confirmed that the decision to begin random screening was made under the authority of the Airport Authority Act 2012, which allows the SAA to take measures to protect the airport and its users.

However, Falefatu admitted that the screening procedures went further than intended. The original plan was for brief security-related questions at the entry gate, but a miscommunication with security staff resulted in more extensive checks, including physical inspections of vehicles and belongings.

“We regret the inconvenience this may have caused,” he said. “The decision was made with the safety and security of all airport users as the highest priority.”

The Samoa Airport Authority is now reviewing its operational protocols to ensure future procedures are clearly communicated and consistently applied.

While the issue has stirred public reaction, Falefatu reflected on a moment of personal encouragement that came just two weeks earlier. During a stopover at Nadi International Airport, he met Elder Ulisses Soares, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The encounter, which included a blessing from Elder Soares, came at a time Falefatu described as “heavy with responsibility.”

The moment, shared publicly on his personal Facebook page, has since taken on greater meaning as tensions around airport security rise.

Falefatu thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation as efforts continue to maintain safety at Samoa’s main international gateway.
